Common Vision Problems

Nearsightedness - Nearsightedness is the most common problem in ophthalmology. Also known as myopia, is the problem where the person with nearsightedness can see objects from far away blurry. Images focus in front of the retina, instead of the retina’s direct surface. This problem can be corrected by using spectacles, contact lenses or undergoing refractive surgery, like LASIK

Farsightedness - Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, affects almost 25% of the population. This issue occurs when the light is entered behind the retina, instead of the retina’s direct surface, because of the short eye and flat cornea which makes the objects too close to you blurry. Just like nearsightedness, farsightedness can be corrected by spectacles, lenses or LASIK surgery.

Astigmatism - Images are seen in this condition are not uniform and distorted, thus objects near and far both appear blurry. It occurs because the cornea is shaped irregularly. The causes of astigmatism are unsure, but it can be easily corrected by using spectacles, contact lenses or LASIK can be helpful for some types of astigmatism.

Presbyopia - Presbyopia is a disorder that affects a person’s reading vision. It normally affects as a result of growing age. The severity of this vision issue is measured by evaluating the shape of the eye and the cornea. These are usually corrected with spectacles, contact lenses or laser vision correction procedures like LASIK, CK, and AST.

Treatment

Generally, a full medical eye examination starts with refraction, checking ocular alignment and motility, checking eye pressure and examining the anterior structure of the eye. A complete evaluation often includes checking the dilated pupils for the posterior structure of the eye, like optic nerve and retina.
